Ramp Metering Using VA Signals in Paramics
Ramp metering, a widely adopted concept by many states, has been difficult to simulate. The difficulty stemmed from the fact that operating a smart metering system relied on detectors, processors and simulated vehicles ability to react to the signal system realistically.
Although “Vehicle Actuated” (VA) signal control has been available through Paramics Modeller for a long time, even if the signal control could be simulated, vehicles would not pick the shortest queued lane at a ramp meter. After the introduction of route choice featusre in Paramics V6, we have decided to re-explore the ramp metering with VA signals. Certainly, the same could be accomplished by utilizing Programmer module, but that would have required a distribution of a plug-in and give less control to other users.
